A very general question this. I have never actually sat and watched Hashcat, I normally just wait till I notice the fans slow back down. But what does the estimated time actually mean? Is it the maximum amount of time to try every combination, and it could find the password earlier, or is it a fairly accurate prediction to solving it?

I have had to downgrade for the time being from my 1080 to a 1060 and suddenly time and things is much more important.

It's an estimated time for how long it will take hashcat to try every combination based on the current hash speed. so if the estimate is for example 10 mins. after about 10mins it will have exhausted the list or current character set.

Thank you for that. I had sort of guessed as much, but couldn't find confirmation that was the case.

I will hope my current session running completes long before the estimated time then.
